Travel vaccinations from Whitechapel — South Asia VFR and Hajj/Umrah
Whitechapel sits at the intersection of one of London's largest South Asian diaspora communities and the new Elizabeth Line corridor. We see a steady flow of patients from this catchment travelling to visit family in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka, plus a strong Hajj/Umrah pilgrim flow particularly in spring and summer.
City Of London Clinic operates from Barbican Pharmacy & Clinic on Goswell Road. From Whitechapel, you can be in the clinic in about 20 minutes — 2 Elizabeth Line stops to Farringdon, then an 8-minute walk east. We're a designated Yellow Fever Centre and every appointment is led by Asad Repon, a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber.
VFR travel to South Asia — what's typically discussed
Travel medicine has a specific category called VFR — Visiting Friends and Relatives. VFR travellers from London to South Asia often need more comprehensive vaccination than tourists because they stay in family homes (more food/water exposure), travel into rural areas (rabies, JE), and may spend longer in-country. Common discussion points:
- Hepatitis A and Typhoid — almost universally recommended for Bangladesh, Pakistan, India.
- Hepatitis B — for longer stays or anyone with potential bodily-fluid exposure.
- Rabies — three-dose pre-exposure course for rural travel, children, or anyone potentially exposed to street dogs.
- Japanese Encephalitis — for rural travel of a month or more, particularly during monsoon.
- Cholera — for flooding/outbreak areas.
We also prescribe malaria tablets (where appropriate based on destination and itinerary) and provide stand-by antibiotics for traveller's diarrhoea.
Hajj and Umrah — the certificates that customs ask for
Saudi Arabia requires all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to have a valid Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate. The certificate must be issued 10 days to 3 years before arrival in Saudi Arabia. We administer Meningitis ACWY (Menveo or Nimenrix) and provide the necessary documentation. Polio vaccination may also be required for travellers coming from countries with ongoing polio transmission — we'll check this against your travel history. Plan to book at least 2 weeks before your departure date so the certificate is valid by then.
Family appointments
For families travelling together, we book one slot per person and run them back-to-back to minimise the time you're in clinic. We've vaccinated families of 6–8 multiple times in a single visit. Children's records are reviewed against the UK childhood immunisation schedule first — there's often less needed than parents expect.
