Travel vaccinations for Nigeria — a London pharmacist-led guide
Nigeria is one of London's biggest corporate-travel destinations. We see a regular flow of M&A travel to Lagos, energy sector trips to Port Harcourt, banking and consulting visits to Abuja, plus a substantial VFR flow from London's Nigerian community. Whether your trip is a 3-day Lagos deal sprint or a 6-month family visit, Nigeria has specific vaccination requirements and recommendations.
City Of London Clinic operates from Barbican Pharmacy & Clinic on Goswell Road — five minutes from Bank station. We're a designated Yellow Fever Centre and every appointment is led by Asad Repon, a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber.
Yellow Fever — mandatory for Nigeria entry
The headline requirement: Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for entry to Nigeria. The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) must be valid by the time of arrival. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for life under the IHR 2016 amendment.
We're a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre under the NaTHNaC scheme, so we administer the vaccine and issue the certificate on the day. See our same-day Yellow Fever certificate page for urgent scenarios. If your trip is within 10 days, we'll discuss medical exemption letter options — though Nigerian immigration officials don't reliably accept exemption letters at the border, so vaccination at least 10 days ahead is the safer plan.
Other vaccines strongly recommended
- Hepatitis A — almost universally recommended.
- Typhoid — strongly recommended.
- Hepatitis B — for longer stays, healthcare-adjacent travel, or expat relocations.
- Rabies — three-dose pre-exposure course for rural travel, extended stays, or anyone handling animals.
- Meningitis ACWY — Nigeria is in the African meningitis belt. Strongly recommended, particularly December-June dry season and longer stays.
- Cholera — for outbreak areas, aid work, or extended stays.
Malaria — essential prophylaxis
Malaria is present year-round throughout Nigeria, including Lagos. Antimalarial prophylaxis is essential. The pharmacist will recommend a regimen based on:
- Length of stay (Malarone, doxycycline or Lariam each suit different durations)
- Any drug interactions or contraindications
- Your specific itinerary (urban Lagos vs travel into the interior)
- Personal preference (tolerability, daily vs weekly dosing)
We can prescribe and dispense in the same appointment.
Lagos M&A and corporate travel
A significant share of our Nigeria patients are travelling for work — deal teams, consulting engagements, banking and oil & gas trips. We're set up for this: corporate accounts with monthly invoicing, VAT receipts, dedicated billing contact, same-day appointments routinely available. For deal teams of 5-15 people travelling together, we schedule efficient back-to-back appointments to minimise downtime.
If you're an HR lead, EA or partner at a City firm with regular Nigeria flow, get in touch via the booking page — we'll open a corporate account, typically same-week. For partner-level travellers heading to Lagos at short notice, see our business travel clinic page.
VFR travel considerations
VFR travellers visiting family in Nigeria face different exposures than tourists — staying in family homes, eating local food, travelling into rural areas, spending longer in-country. Children visiting family for the first time often need more comprehensive protection than parents who grew up locally. We tailor the plan to actual VFR patterns. For comparison with East African business travel, see our Kenya guide.
